How to configure a Hikvision IP camera for use with the HTTP service

Some Hikvision IP cameras support MJPEG streaming and can be used in combination with the IXON HTTP service to easily access the camera feed without first needing to set up a VPN connection. The Hikvision models to which this applies include but are not limited to:

  • Hikvision DS-2CD2045FWD-I
  • Hikvision DS-2DE2A204IW-DE3

The following steps explain both the IP camera and HTTP service configuration.

  1. Change the configuration of the Hikvision camera.
    1. Make sure that the IP camera is running firmware V4.1 or higher (source).
    2. Open the IP camera's webserver and go to Configuration > Video/Audio > Video.
    3. Change the Stream Type to Sub-stream.
    4. Change the Video Encoding to MJPEG.

  2. Create an HTTP service or edit the configuration of an existing one.
    1. Change the Default landing page to:
      /ISAPI/Streaming/channels/102/httpPreview
