Data usage
The amount of data that your IXrouter uses is highly dependent on how the IXrouter is configured and how (much) the IXrouter is used.

Recommendations
SIM card data plan
While the data usage highly depends on how (much) you will use the IXrouter, a data plan of 1 GB / month is generally sufficient.
Reduce data usage
To reduce your data usage as much as possible:
- Turn off VPN when you do not need it (instructions).
- Note that turning off VPN disables VPN, HTTP service, and VNC service features, because these rely on the IXrouter's VPN connection to function.
- Remove fallback connection types (failover) if these are not needed (instructions).
- If fallback connection types cannot be removed, change the tracking settings.
- The tracking settings to determine how fast the IXrouter changes to another connection type when a connection type becomes (un)available. To change these settings:
- Go to the device's WAN settings in the Fleet Manager.
- Under Internet priority, open the tracking settings
.
- Increase the Tracking interval (default: 5 seconds) or remove some of the tracking IP addresses.
- The tracking settings to determine how fast the IXrouter changes to another connection type when a connection type becomes (un)available. To change these settings:
- Turn off internet access for the machine network if this is not needed (instructions).
- This does not affect the IXrouter's internet access. It only affects the internet access for devices connected to the IXrouter's LAN side and is turned off by default.
In more detail
Internet data usage
Actively using the IXrouter, like pushing new configurations, upgrading firmware, using the HTTP or VNC service, using Live data, Historical data, or Alarming, establishing a VPN connection and downloading a new project to your machine, other actions over the VPN connection, or devices in the machine network accessing the internet will result in additional data usage. This additional data usage cannot be determined beforehand, because it depends on countless unknown factors.
Live data, Historical data, and Alarming data usage
The use of Live data, Historical data, and Alarming increase the data usage, as mentioned above. While their data usage cannot be accurately calculated beforehand, a general indication for Historical data can be observed from our internal testing.
Internal test results
Any deviation in conditions will result in a different data usage. Internal testing was done with a total of 20 data tags, all with the same logging interval.
